New to shibari? Our Shibari 101 course is where Seattle folks come to begin their journey.
This small-group workshop is made for complete beginners — no experience needed.
Classes are capped at 8 tying pairs, so you get individual feedback as you learn, in an inclusive, consent-forward space where questions are welcome and the pace stays low-key and relaxed.

Safety and consent come first — they're the foundation everything else stands on.
From there you'll learn basic knots, frictions and rope handling, then build your first floorwork ties step by step, with guidance throughout. And because you'll understand how ties are structured, you'll leave with the groundwork that later leads toward partial suspension and beyond.
Shibari 101 is the first rung of the ladder — and a complete, satisfying class in its own right.

Jonathan Ryan is an international rope artist who performs on stage, ties for photoshoots, and teaches the art of Shibari worldwide. He has taught and performed for sold-out audiences in 15 countries and 24 cities, including Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Barcelona, London, Shanghai, and Los Angeles.
As a teacher, Jonathan draws on a 20-year career in curriculum design and differentiating instruction for diverse learning styles. He travels yearly to Japan for continuing immersion in his own studies, and holds a high-level teaching license awarded to him by his mentor Hajime Kinoko of Tokyo, Japan.
Sappho is an unabashed lover of rope who brings expertise in Latin dance forms and a spirit of sensual inquiry to her kinbaku. She has taught and performed in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, where she is noted for her insights into rope, both physically and psychologically.
A practicing physician specializing in neuro-anatomy, Sappho expertly combines a dancer's somatic awareness of movement with her extensive professional knowledge of the body. She is passionate about sharing this knowledge with others.

Shibari 101 is for complete beginners — partners, friends, and tying pairs of all genders, body types, and orientations.
Our Shibari workshops are inclusive and consent-forward, low-key and relaxed: nothing is a performance, and every exercise we offer to the group is an invitation, never an expectation.
We bring both skill and passion to our teaching, and we especially love working with beginners! We believe that the fundamentals are the most essential tools for progress, and we teach them carefully.
Our student feedback speaks for itself. We have taught thousands of students around the world, and have had the honor and privilege to guide countless folks from their very first steps in Shibari through advanced suspensions.

Yes. Shibari 101 assumes no experience at all — most students are complete beginners, and everything is built up step by step from the very first knot.
Yes. Our workshops are taught in tying pairs, so please register with a partner — a romantic partner, a friend, or a regular tying partner are all fine. We're not able to pair up solo students at the door.
Safety and consent first, then basic knots, frictions and rope handling, and your first floorwork ties — plus how ties are structured, which is the groundwork for everything that comes after 101.
Small — capped at 8 tying pairs. That's deliberate: it means you get individual feedback from Jonathan and Sappho throughout the workshop, not a demonstration you watch from the back.
We teach at venues around Seattle. The exact address for your workshop comes with your ticket confirmation.
Then you stop or skip it. Consent isn't a disclaimer in our classes, it's the foundation. Every exercise is an invitation, and checking in with your partner is part of what you're learning.
Yes. Please bring your own rope to workshops. Most students bring a few lengths of natural-fiber rope, such as jute or hemp. We offer a jute rope kit for sale that is designed specifically or our Shibari 101 class.
Shibari 101 runs regularly in Seattle, and classes are small — capped at 8 tying pairs — so they sell out. See our Events page for the next date and to book tickets. We'd love to see you on the mats.
